Fan Storyline analysis can be found here and here.
Enterprise:
Enterprise herself is one of many other women who represent the spirits of historical naval ships; given from a mysterious “Creator” using wisdom cubes and the will of their commander. Her entire background history largely follows the historical events of WW2, with she herself belonging to the Eagle Union nation (her world’s version of the United States) and a member of the Azur Lane alliance. For much of the Pacific war she would be one of the only aircraft carriers in operation after having witnessed the sinking of her sisters Yorktown (who would pass on her eagle Grim to Enty) and Hornet, as well as the sinking of Wasp. A list of the game’s chapters can be found here and a quick overview of her historical information can be found here. As a further note the campaign seems to go to the Battle of the Philippine Sea.
Beyond Main Campaign:
Going beyond the campaign is when things become a bit more complex. The storyline for Mircrolayer Medley can be found here and additionally Ashen Simulacrum. Both of which show Enterprise and the game’s Commander as being important characters in the story’s game. During both events Enty faces off against an alternate version of herself who seems to have an agenda all her own. While the current timeline’s Enterprise seems to have been given a glimpse into a potential future following the events of Microlayer.
CANON POINT: Post Mircrolayer Medley
CRAU HISTORY: N/A
AGE: 25
APPEARANCE:
Pic 1 | Pic 2
A young woman with violet eyes and silver hair. Dressed in a long coat, boots, skirt, and wearing a captain’s hat and tie. She appears rather relaxed, easy going, and at times kind of sloppy. Her rigging is that of a USN Carrier, while the compound bow, she carries is also comprised of her titular ship’s rigging.
CONTRACT PAYMENT: Nothing too specific beyond a life of peace after the war back home. Especially for her commander and friends.
QUESTIONNAIRE:
1) What are your greatest regrets, if you have any? What would you have done differently?
“Regrets? That’s- yes, it’s hard not to regret anything.” She frowns for a moment as her thoughts turn towards past friends. Towards her sisters. Words left unsaid, actions never taken, lives snuffed out like candles well before they burnt down to their base. “I’m not certain if there’s anything I could do differently. I would certainly try, but I don’t know if things could have turned out all that favorably. At times I do feel as if I should have done more, and then I feel as if doing more would not be enough. That I would have to give up the whole of myself. I still feel that way in everything I do.”
Her frown deepens. “What I regret the most… what I regret the most is being unable to face the future with my sisters, and the friends I have lost along the way. It might be a bit silly, but… but I don’t want any others to live in fear or suffer. To live in fear or experience oppression. It might be a bit hypocritical of me to say that. But to experience peace with others, especially those you love, I don’t think that’s a silly desire.”
She sighs and shakes her head. “My biggest regret is simply that. Regretting not being able to save those I care for and letting them experience an unknown future of peace. Even if it’s just a moment.”
2) What is your favorite diversion? Hobbies, indulgences, vices? Would you put off important things for that diversion, or would you be more strict about how you spend your time and/or money?
“My hobbies? Hm- honestly, I don’t have many. I’m usually the type that spends much of her time working. There’s a lot riding on me back home, so I can’t really afford to take breaks often. So no, I can’t really say that I would put off things I consider to be important for a momentary diversion.” A somewhat embarrassed smile crosses her lips at that. Just when was the last time she had taken an earnest break? It feels like forever, but that was also to be expected when you’re largely the only carrier operating in an entire ocean. Still, Enterprise does take a moment longer to think the question over more.
What does she like to do during her time off?
“When I do, I usually spend time trying out new foods, or spending time with my Commander. At times both, I am very fond of meat-based dishes and ice cream. Especially dishes prepared by Belfast and Vestal. I’m not all that fond of vegetables but will eat them if I have to.” She was starting to go off on a wistful tangent now and soon gave a chuckle to stop herself.
“So, I guess you can say that I’m usually rather strict with my time and money. But not the point of being miserly. More pragmatic, I think.” Or maybe more like a workaholic, as some others might describe her. Enty herself wouldn’t use that word herself either.
3) An enemy of your faction has asked for a meeting, proposing a truce of sorts to deal with a greater threat. On one hand, there is indeed a threat at hand, but on the other, this person double-crossing you is just as likely an outcome. Do you agree to the meeting? Do you trust them?
“I agree to the meeting whole heartedly but will hold my own reserves against them. If they are known to be as untrustworthy as suggested.”
This was speaking more from experience on her part. The Crimson Axis and Azur Lane camps weren’t exactly on friendly terms. But had been able to call semi-truces before- usually shaky at best. Enty herself has no doubt in her mind that once the more immediate, and greater threat, to both of their existences was dealt with, things would erupt in violence once more. As far as she is aware, the given scenario would most likely play out in the same way.
“That’s not to say I wouldn’t give them the benefit of a doubt. Just that, once all is said and done, I wouldn’t put it past them to do what it is they feel is necessary. Part of me wouldn’t hold it against them either. Not when I would probably be doing something similar.”
Granted she wouldn’t exactly immediately turn against them. If anything, she’d most likely give the other party a chance to regroup for a moment to breath. Not just as a form of courtesy, but as a way to give herself a moment to breath and recoup as well.
4) An oni of the Shuten Clan has gone completely berserk, and is going on a violent rampage through the city. You can't stop him, but you CAN lead him elsewhere, but you only have two choices: a road by a discotheque with a large crowd in front, or the nearby park that you do not know is unoccupied, and may have children present. What do you choose, and why?
“Only two choices is it?”
She nods and thinks for a moment. Normally she might say look for another answer, but there is apparently not another choice to be made here beyond the two.
“The first thing I would do is to ascertain the risk of each choice. Such as the time of day, the day of the week, are there any known events occurring? Given that the enemy is unlikely to be reached through words, I would have to figure out the strength of the enemy, do they show any form of weakness that I might be able to exploit to keep them busy? Then there’s also the matter of the environment. Is it more expedient to keep them near the discotheque? Or would it be better to lead them towards the playground?”
She hums a bit more in thought as she mulls it over.
“The park could be cleared well in advance once the news of the rampage is made clear and where the enemy is heading. But the question remains can it be cleared in time, and if there are any children present. It’s not really a gamble I would want to take unless I was given the certainty that it could be cleared.” There was a head tilt, and a tap of her chin as she thinks it over more.
“The crowd, on the other hand, while they might panic, I’ve no doubt that they will clear out of the way quickly enough and perhaps find a safe spot inside the building. The added attention may allow for some help from local authorities more swiftly than if I was simply stringing the oni along.” Finally, she nodded her head after a brief pause to think it over, playing the scenario out in her head.
“I think I would hold them at the discotheque. The most I could do in this situation would be to minimize damage and loss of life and injury to those present. While making it more likely for the enemy to be subdued.”
POWERS & ABILITIES:
Water walking – As the spirit of a ship she can float/walk on top of water and move about with a great amount of speed and maneuverability.
Aircraft Summon - As the spirit of an aircraft carrier she can launch aircraft from her bow or deck. In game they typically act as arrows and have been depicted as bolts of light in the anime.
Strength and Stamina – Superhuman strength and stamina. Able to draw her huge compound bow with little effort and launch aircraft into the sky with just as little effort. While her stamina is a reflection of her being the personification of an aircraft carrier. She is able to operate and move for long periods of time without rest. That said, she still is susceptible to human needs, such as regular rest, food and water, and so on.
Iron Gut - Canon-wise the girls drink coolant and oil, among other things. Shipgirls go brrrrrr….
Lucky E - Her ultimate, it strengthens both herself and her allies and grants an invincibility buff. It’s a manifestation of the ships titular, supernatural luck. Attacks may simply miss her, or fail entirely, while her own might be capable of making lucky, decisive hits.
SUITABILITY: While Enterprise isn’t herself isn’t really accustomed to aspects of organized crime. She is no stranger to themes involving war. Having watched the strategic destruction of lives and homes, and actions being perpetrated against other people in the name of doing “what is necessary”. She isn’t a stranger to fighting or seeing others harmed or harming others. The overall violent setting that Jigoku offers, therefore, is nothing new to her. As much as Enty would rather avoid violence and death as much as she possibly can, being from an alternate version of WW2, and her entire being, she wouldn’t blink towards the aforementioned themes.
In terms of sex, drugs, and rock an’ roll- she is still part of the Navy and is also familiar with those themes. If only in passing, facilitated by spending long stretches of time out at sea where each moment might be her last. Drinking, gambling, visiting cathouses, and so on are activities she knows of even if she herself would not have cut loose with other sailors beyond visiting a local bar.
FACTION SUITABILITY:
Shuten: All in all Enty does hold death before dishonor highly. While she herself isn’t much of one for the whole philosophy of might makes right, she isn’t opposed to throwing around weight and strength to reach a specific goal. Enty does hold strength in relatively high regard, again not necessarily as an end all be all, and views growing stronger as a sign of excellence. Whether through more martial means, monetary, mental, or otherwise. She is, after all, the personification of a warship; and notably considered the strongest around. Her whole being is to be a show and force of strength and nature in and of herself.
Enma: Enterprise’s whole goal is to live in a world of peace and justice. To carry on the will of her sisters and that of the hopes and dreams that gave her form. To that end, Enterprise has a strong sense of right from wrong, and will do all in her power to see things done right. She is, by default, lawful good and while the Enma might not share in those ideals, they do share in the idea of order being brought to the world. She knows that doing so isn’t necessarily always the easiest thing to do, and at times it might the hardest. While Enty might not be for using more underhanded methods to reach point C, she isn’t opposed to bend the rules a bit, or to use trickery and knowledge to go from A to C. So long as she isn’t expected to perform anything too abhorrent.
Tamamo: Enterprise typically doesn’t lean too heavily into her desires, she doesn’t seek pleasure, but on occasion does indulge just a tad. She might even argue that the occasional cutting loose is a good thing. In particular, Enty is often described as a voracious and picky eater with a penchant for meat-based dishes and a general dislike for greens. Going just a step further, she is sometimes jokingly thought of as being the one to take her commander’s shirts and cuddle with them. Taking in the warmth and scent of the fabric. In that way, she can also be considered as being lustful and pining for her dear commander. Something further conflated by her wanting to stay by their side well after the war is over. Something further reflected in he relationships with Belfast and Vestal, both of whom she also shares similar feelings with, inspiration, fascination, and a general desire to grow closer to. In all, her pleasures tend to be small, taking them where and when she can, and born out of love for others.
Sutoku: Midway was won with intelligence, the entire Pacific war, and the war with Siren’s, has largely been fought with naval intelligence as much as it has with force. In that sense Enterprise shares in the Alliance’s emphasis on information. Moving beyond that, the loose collection of different peoples coming together for the power of the people, speaks to her. The notion of equality is something that forms the bedrock of the Eagle Union, and Enterprises’ own beliefs. A group led by the many as opposed to the few is an ideal worth fighting for, in her opinion. And while when pressed, she would certainly agree that there is most likely more to it than meets the eye, especially when considering the focus on piety. Enterprise is typically more inclined to throw herself in service of those who are caught on the backfoot with only their ideals and people behind them to protect.
